Executive Director
Mission Mill Museum

Position Description:
The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors for the overall management of Mission Mill Museum, in alignment with the Museum’s mission and goals as outlined in the Strategic Plan, as well as implementing Board-approved policies and budgets.

Employment Terms: Salaried with benefits. Salary commensurate with experience

Accountability: Mission Mill Museum Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Reviews progress with the Board in achieving the goals of the Strategic Plan and works with the Board in considering appropriate revisions.
  • Works with the Board to define the most effective staffing structure to accomplish the museum’s mission and goals within available funds.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, motivating, supervision and discipline of staff, within legal requirements and board-approved personnel policies and budgets.
  • Recommends the annual budget for Board adoption and administers the budget, including making monthly financial reports to the board.
  • Represents Mission Mill Museum in the community.
  • Responsible for membership relations and growth, including oversight of print, electronic and personal communications and special membership programs and benefits.
  • Responsible for maximizing income from capital and program grants, other contributions to current programs, and the development of endowment income.
  • Oversees marketing efforts, including press relations, advertising and community partnerships, with the goals of increasing community awareness, tour participation, other site visits, and program participation.
  • Overall responsibility for preservation and maintenance of buildings, site, equipment, and collections of historic objects, documents and photographs.
  • Overall responsibility for education programs, research, interpretation and presentation in events, classes, exhibits, tours, speakers and publications.
  • Overall responsibility for maximizing earned income from facility, office, shop and parking rentals.
  • Keeps the Executive Committee and Board of Directors fully informed, prepares agendas and materials for all meetings.
  • Serves as an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and all standing committees.

The successful candidate for Executive Director must have:

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in Business, Public Administration,  History, Social Science or the Humanities and at least three years of relevant experience; or at least seven years of relevant experience if no degree.
  • Strong leadership ability and interpersonal skills, with the capability to lead a staff of more than a dozen people and to work effectively with board, volunteers, donors and the community, as evidenced by previous work experience.
  • Demonstrated success in development and fundraising, including special events, grant applications and endowment fund development.
  • Knowledge of museum and/or other non-profit operations and management, including fiscal controls, accounting, budget development and administration.

Relevant to the above requirements, we also desire:
•           Excellent written and oral communications skills.
•           Demonstrated planning skills, including long-range planning and goal-setting.
•           Demonstrated knowledge/experience with marketing and public relations.
•           General interest in historic preservation and/or regional history.
