Upcoming Volunteer Trainings!
Docent Training
Saturdays, April 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th
10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Docents lead guided tours through the exhibits and assist
with educational programs on and off site. Being a docent
is a great way to learn more about area history and connect
with a variety of visitors, from grade school students to international travelers. Docent training is a four-week
course that covers the history of the area and strategies
and techniques for leading successful tours and activities.
Registration Deadline: March 27th.
Living History Interpreter Training
Saturdays, May 1st & 8th
10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Living history can change the way people look and think about history and make education fun. Playing horseshoes with a group of mill workers or discussing illnesses and
cures with a missionary in the herb garden brings Museum
stories to life. Living history interpreters step back in time,
literally, researching and becoming historical characters.
Living History Interpreter Training introduces participants
to diff erent techniques, formats, research methods and materials used in developing and performing living history.
Registration Deadline: April 24th.
Blacksmith Training
Saturdays, June 5th
10:00 am - 12:00 pm &
June 12th & 19th
10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Material Fees: $35
Come learn how to transform iron! Trained blacksmiths work on site in the Machine Shop forge and demonstrate
the craft for our visitors. Th is three-day training course
covers the fundamentals of blacksmithing and a general overview of the workings of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.
Space is limited. Registration Deadline: May 15th.
Teen Interpreter Program (TIP)
Orientation: June 21st - 24th
10:00 am – 2:30 pm
Program Runs: June 21st - August 31st
The Teen Interpreter Program challenges high school students to explore Oregon’s history through drama. During this summer volunteer program, students
plan, research and present living history programs and
demonstrations to museum visitors. Interested students
must apply for the program. Application materials and
more information will be available soon on this page.

Love
history? Love to meet interesting people? Want to practice your public
speaking/theatrical skills? Join our elite tour guide group and lead visitors
through the museum. Guide groups from school age to seniors. A few more
guides are needed for the houses at 11, 1 and 3 Monday through Saturday.
Training provided. This is your chance to help our visitors learn about
Salem's history - and have fun doing it!
Mission Mill Museum is hopping with activity all year long, from living
history to the Handweavers' Sale, gallery openings, Magic
at the Mill, Sheep to Shawl, Big Band Dances, Speaker Series and
so much more! Be a part of the fun - join us as an events volunteer. We
have chores galore to suit almost every volunteer interest.
Our
volunteer internships are varied and flexible, and many college majors
can be enhanced by spending time at Mission Mill. For starters, we
offer
internships in research/writing, archives/artifacts, marketing, education
and hospitality. Hours and exact duties will be adjusted to suit a
student's
needs. Drama, marketing and business, English, education, history,
archaeology, and even botany majors can find an internship here!
